Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a historical sacred bo tree (Ficus religiosa) in Sri Lanka's medieval city of Anuradhapura. This is thought to be a tree that sprang from a pruning of the southern branch of the ancient sacred bo tree, Sri Maha Bodhi, which was destroyed during the reign of Emperor Ashoka the Great at Buddha Gaya, India, and under which Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) acquired Enlightenment. During the reign of Sinhalese King Devanampiya Tissa, the Buddhist nun Sangamitta Maha Theri, a daughter of Indian Emperor Ashoka, brought the tree cutting to Sri Lanka around 288 BC. It is the world's oldest living human-planted tree with a known planting date, dating back more than 2,300 years.
